A Socio-psychological Study of the Tattoo Among Some Korean Coal Workers

Abstract
This study was conducted for the purpose of finding out the sociopsychological factors of the tattoo among some Korean coal workers and also to contribute to research into youth tattooing.
For this study, a total of 2,399 male workers, of whom 2,282 were taking the detailed examination for pneumoconiosis and 117 were inpatients, were interviewed and asked to answer 15 questions on a designated questionnaire.
This study was carried out in the Industrial Accident Hospital for a one-year period from Sep. 19th 1983 to Sep. 24th 1984.
The following results were obtained from this study;
1) The prevalence of tattooing was 4.5£¥ and the highest rate was in the 50 years of age group (6.8£¥). The average of tattooed subjects was 47.4 years.
2) As to the site of the tattoo, left forearms (37.8£¥) and left upper arms (25.0£¥) accounted for the greater number while 54.1£¥ had only one tattoo on one site.
3) Kinds of tattoos-50.7£¥ were letters and 49.3£¥ were pictures. The most frequently seen contents were related to the opposite sex (21.7£¥).
4) The average age at time of being tattooed was 21.1 years and the highest number occured between 1951 and 1960(64.9£¥).
5) Of the total, 41.3£¥ were in military service at time of tattooing.
6) The main motivation for tattooing was curiosity (30.4£¥) and groups consisting of 3 or more people were tattooed together, while 24.3£¥ directly tattooed them-selves.
7) The method of tattooing was learned from friends (47.7£¥) or from fellow soldiers (40.4£¥). The present psycological state of those who were tattoos in mainly one of regret or wishing to have them removed.
8) Criminal experience of the tattooed subjects was only 8.3£¥
9) Personality of the tattooed subjects was mainly radicalism and extroversion (40.4£¥) rather than conservatism and introversion(26.6£¥).
